Venus 2141 is a science fiction tabletop roleplaying game set in the year 2141. The solar system has been partly colonized. While Mars is locked in a war of independence, Venus has become the hot new colony from people fleeing Earth's anthropogenic global cooling..
People live in what are essentially balloons floating 50 km above the surface of the planet, where Venus's pressures and temperatures stabilize at nearly earth-like levels. These balloons, known as rafts, are themselves a form of engineered lifeform.
As you might expect the world has powerful biotechnology, and indeed other forms of manufacturing technology, but general nanotech and artificial intelligence have not yet been achieved. Human society and culture have changed, but not unrecognizably so.
For more details about Venus's colonization, culture and history, take a look at the Venus tab above.
A healthy supply of six sided dice and the book. This website and some paper should come in handy as well. You also will need the character sheet, which by some terrible accident was not in the book. character_sheet.pdf
While this site has most of the system information and nearly all of the technology creation details for your convenience, the book has a wealth of additional setting details and information. We guarantee it's a good read, full of fun interesting stuff that you can use to run Venus or any other near-future game. It also has lots of fantastic art, never seen before anywhere else.
At any rate, we strongly suggest you take a look at The Future is Covered with Goo, the campaign started by me just before publication. It has a good starting scenario, some sample characters, and links to descriptions of both the actual play of the session and my notes from before the game ran. And the later session notes should give you some ideas as to where you might want to take a game after the first session should you have player interest. Or heck, you could just run them like a series of modules, whatever works for you.
Soyuz Arts is our publishing company - Our meaning Tony Pace, the writer guy (aka me), and Nathan Leeson, the artist and designer. It's very much a collaboration between us, so we chose the name both for the space connotations and for the fact that it means alliance in Russian.
Also, Soyuz. 10 times more launches than any other rocket. Pretty much built the ISS. Actually works. Battle tested, battle scarred. Awesome.
We can't believe we're the first game company to think of it.
This site is a wiki that smoothly links together all the interlocking parts of the game. All the skills, lifestyles, technologies and features that you would want to look up during play are available at the click of a link. Having gone through the hard slog of putting it all up, I would be hard put to run a game without it.
We are considering limiting future registration to people who have shown some sort of proof that they have the book. If you are a pioneer of whatever sort, consider yourself 'grandfathered in' for the small price of clicking 'Login' at the bottom of the page and then registering.
There are a variety of errors in the book - some minor, some not. If something there confuses you, please take a look here. It may well have already been fixed by an army of gremlins. More likely, me.
I would be very happy if you helped out in any way you could - one great thing to do would be to make a 'campaign' page even if you are just messing around with some ideas a little. Once you are registered just click 'Edit this Page' and from there click on the 'syntax' link for some basic instructions. I would love to see what you come up with!
This site is under continual reconstruction and with luck that will not change soon. If you do get into editing the site in any way, keep in mind that:
Discussion
Hey guys, Nathan can attest to my ownership! I am getting into the book and really getting into the game. I can't believe you actually managed to make a skill-tree system work this smoothly. More comments and some text suggestions to follow, one day - email me to remind me if necessary. Best, Ron
Thanks Ron. Nathan did indeed attest to your ownership without you even needing to mention it. If you registered, then you're registered. That's all forever.
Sadly, it has been necessary to turn off unregistered comments (although we appreciate the taste of the future from chinese viagra spammers.)
